Interpretive Data

A positive direct antiglobulin test (DAT) IgG in infants/neonates less than 4 months of age could be due to ABO incompatibility with mother or maternal antibodies to red cell antigens or medications which have passed to the infant/neonate.  Before 4 months of age, infants or neonates do not produce their own functioning antibodies and therefore what is found is of maternal origin.

After 4 months of age, orders for a DAT will receive the standard DAT using polyspecific AHG to detect both IgG and complement bound to infant's RBCs.
