Specimen Requirement (s)

Specimen Type: Endocervical, Vaginal, Pharyngeal, Rectal specimens.

     NOTE: Pharyngeal and Rectal specimens tested only at Belleville. Shiloh specimens will be sent                      to Bellville for testing. 

Container/Tube:

  1. Use Xpert CT/NG Vaginal/Endocervical Specimen Collection kit Includes: * one large rayon-tipped cleaning swab * one copan flocked swab and one pink capped swab transport tube.
  2. Urine specimens: both male and female urine specimens must be collected in a sterile, plastic, preservative- free specimen collection cup with lid. NOTE: Collect FIRST 20 – 50 mLs of voided urine, not mid-stream collection.

Unacceptable Conditions

1. Uretheral swabs on males

2. Clean -catch or catheterized urines

3. Urine specimens received with > 50mL of urine.

4. Heavily soiled rectal specimens cannot be tested.

5. Swab/specimen collected in containers other than for the Gene Xpert.

6. Thin Prep PAP smear specimens. (see BJH CT/NG testing)

Turnaround Time:

STAT: 60 minutes

Routine: less than 8 hours from receipt.

Transport and Stability

Xpert Swabs – 60 days at room temp or refrigerated.

Urine (in collection cup) – 24 hours at Room Temp,  7 days refrigerated.

Urine in Xpert transport tube – 3 days at room temp, 45 days refrigerated.

Interpretive Data

Both Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae testing will be done on all specimens. Performance has not been evaluated on female patients <14 years of age and male patients <17 years of age. Performance has not been evaluated on pregnant women or in patients with a history of hysterectomy. The GeneXpert Chlamydia trachomatis/Neisseria gonorrhoeae amplified CNA assay should not be used for the evaluation of suspected sexual abuse or for other medico-legal indications.
