Interpretive Data
FDA approved the D-dimer, in conjunction with a low or moderate pretest probability score, to exclude venous thromboembolic events (VTE) (PE and DVT) in outpatients when the D-dimer result is < 500 ng/ml FEU.
Evidence supports using an age-adjusted D-dimer cut-off for outpatients older than 50 (age x 10) to improve specificity without sacrificing sensitivity. Example: age 68, VTE cut-off 680 ng/ml FEU.
