Specimen Requirement (s)

Specimen:  Plasma

Type: Container/Tube:  Lavender (EDTA) tube (preferred), white (K3EDTA) PPT, or Sodium EDTA tube.

Specimen Volume: full tube

Specimen Minimum Volume:  2 mL

 

Collection Instructions:

  • Fasting recommended.
  • Morning draw recommended due to diurnal rhythm.

Surgical:

  • Order the PTH level before the case.
  • Note time that parathyroid was removed.
  • After specimen collection, call lab to come pick up the specimen.
  • Lab personnel will pick up specimen from patient receiving.

 

Lab instructions:

  • Plasma must be separated from cells within 2 hours of draw time.

Surgical

  • Retrieve specimen from patient receiving.
  • Test immediately.
  • If there are delays, call pathologist and OR
  • Call OR with results as soon as available.
