Specimen Type: Pleural, pericardial, peritoneal (ascites), CSF and synovial fluids are the only acceptable body fluid specimens.

- Patient should be fasting for 8-12 hours.
- Patient must not consume alcohol for 24 hours before specimen is drawn.

Interpretive Data
Pleural - As supportive evidence to Light's criteria, pleural fluid cholesterol may provide additional evidence in differentiating exudates (>45 mg/dL) from transudates (< 45 mg/dL). In addition, Cholesterol <200 mg/dL is indicative of chylothorax while cholesterol >200 mg/dL rules out chylothorax.
