Specimen Requirement (s)
Specimen Type: Whole blood, serous fluid, synovial fluid, or Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Container/Tube:
- lavender (EDTA) top tube for WB and serous or synovial fluids.
- CSF - sterile collection tube. No anticoagulant should be used with CSF.
- Sodium Citrate (light blue tube) may be used when platelet clumping or satellitism is noted in the EDTA specimen.
Specimen Volume: 2 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL (250 µL for microtainer)
Collection Instructions: Invert tube several times after draw to mix anticoagulant. Deliver to laboratory immediately.
Unacceptable Conditions
- Clotted samples
- Samples containing clots, fibrin strands or platelet clumps
- Grossly hemolyzed samples
- Samples drawn above an IV site.
