Important Note

Mother’s information MUST be present on the pink label on the tube under the Cerner label.

Specimen must be labeled with PPID (Cerner) label when computer system is up.  

During downtime, specimen must be hand labeled with

  • patient's name,
  • DOB,
  • hospital registration number,
  • FULL SIGNATURE of phlebotomist or RN drawing the specimen
  • FULL SIGNATURE of witness after verifying patient information and tube
  • date and time specimen was drawn.

Methodology

Gel Microtube or manual tube testing

Specimen Requirement (s)

Specimen Type: Whole Blood

Container/Tube: Pink top (EDTA) tube (Red top if using cord blood is acceptable).

Specimen Volume: 7-10 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL whole blood

 

Collection Instructions: Pink or red top tube is acceptable and is collected by Labor and Delivery or Nursery at the time of birth. Pink top tubes are preferable.

  • Separator gel tube is not acceptable.
